The vacations are on and I am at home! Totally free, having nothing to do. Strange thing is that those things which I so much adored to do when I had to study do not seem to charm me now. Whether it be watching movies, serials, 9gaging, the list does not end here, it goes on to include even something as attractive as sleeping, oh yes, I donot feel like sleeping much nowdays. Wondering if its just me or is this the case with everyone. So this brings us to what am I actually doing these past days, I do watch a movie now and then ( for those who don't know me well, I am the kind of person who watches 3-4 movies per day, so now and then, is, strange ). I have always had a thing for rom-coms and chick flicks, so I have been watching those kinds of movies a lot lately. One of those is "Chasing Liberty", I chanced to watch it on tv and found it something that most of us can relate to even though its about the US president's daughter. On the outside, its a really stupid movie but then if you see it, like me, even you might feel like been there kinds. Its about a girl chasing her freedom ( the movie title...yeah that is double meaning...one of those is these, for the other one, watch the movie ;) ). She is never allowed to be herself, do whatever she wants, roam about and enjoy life in her own way. And then suddenly I realise, isn't this the case with many of us, parental restrictions, societal restrictions, damn, there are restrictions all around us. Are we in the true sense, master of our choice? Are we really doing what we want? Do we have the freedom of thought, speech in the true sense? For a country who takes pride in saying that we have won our freedom (no disrespect to the freedom fighters in any way) , we surely have not been able to maintain that. From a simple school girl who cannot voice her opinions in front of her friends and family to a mature grown up person, who cannot voice his/her opinions for fear of society, the true freedom, the freedom of thought and speech is just an illusion that we have created to soothe our egos. But we are living in a clam shell, we are living our life by rules whereas life should be lived like a bird which can go wherever it wants without restrictions. Our life is our own, we should not live it under the shadow of some real life figure or by the unsaid rules of the vague notion of society. We make the society, the society merely shows us what the majority want, what the majority are doing, it in no sense should be the guiding map of our choices. Getting influenced by our surroundings is different, following the majority without thinking is what I am talking about here. Lets voice our opinions, bring our thoughts to the forefront, for a change do what we like to do, what we want to do. Let us for a change, let our innerself loose. Let us for a change, live life :) :) :)
Radical notions of freedom! I get these a lot. Listen to songs of this Hindi movie called 'Udaan', they explain the same concept quite brilliantly.
ReplyDeleteGood one.
cool thinking ;) .. But I think having social norms is necessary as man is a social being and this way might be good as it might be evolutionary powerful .. And also, there will always be free thinkers (and random mutations) .. And they will always drive forward man if they are capable to .. Freedom to a group will always make the task of such free thinkers easier .. But given the kind of species we are in following social norms is the best strategy there is ..
ReplyDelete@ShahNSha: if someone agrees with the social norms, then there is no problem. I am talking about people who are forced to follow social norms and who are not allowed to let themselves be the way they want. I would love every person to be a free thinker :)
ReplyDelete@intutius: Thanx :) yep, even I have heard these arguments many times, today was just when I could relate to them personally. And yes, the udaan songs....very nice :)
